Monthly Review: May 2019

May was a VERY strong reading month for me, I reviewed six books and would happily recommend all of them to anyone looking for a bookish suggestion. There’s not many months I can actually – truly – say that so, like I said, strong!

My May Reviews…

/ Eat, Drink, Run by Bryony Gordon

/ The Colour of Bee Larkham’s Murder by Sarah J. Harris

/ The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell

/ My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing

/ The Hoarder by Jess Kidd

/ You Are What You Read by Jodie Jackson

Let’s start with fiction: I had a touch of Victorian gothic with The Silent Companions (Laura Purcell is an author I recently discovered and I love her tone and spooky themes); a touch of married murderers in the psychological thriller My Lovely Wife; a touch of the supernatural (as is Jess Kidd’s signature) in The Hoarder and one of the most memorable narrators I’ve encountered in a while in The Colour of Bee Larkham’s Murder. Four very different books, but something there to suit a range of tastes… although thinking about them I now realise they all kind of feature a murder of some sort, so maybe my tastes are not as varied as I first thought!

My two non-fiction books in May were also fantastic: Eat, Drink Run is journalist Bryony Gordon’s account of how exercise helps her control her mental health issues and I just found it so inspiring I actually took myself out for my first run in years! I took part in the blog tour for You Are What You Read, which was an extremely topical read for me as recently I’ve consciously not been watching or reading much news; it’s just so negative all the time and makes me feel down. This is exactly what this book looks at – the negative bias the news has and how we can choose our own media diet by reading more solutions based journalism that talks about what’s being achieved in the world, rather than everything that’s going wrong; it was such an interesting read. This is what I love about blog tours, they introduce people to books that they might not hear about otherwise and are so, so worth reading.

Let’s see if June’s reads can reach this very high bar, until then, Happy Reading!

    1. Ah, that’s so nice to hear, thank you – hope you like it now! I know, it’s always great to feel like you’re on a reading high; I think this could be because I’ve become a lot more selective with my reads recently and have embraced DNF if I’m really not feeling the book. It’s been liberating!

      1. I think I need to do more of that, DNF! I did make some room on my shelf today for an author I used to read on the past, but based on one of the last books I read a few months ago, I don’t have any desire to read them!

    1. Quite rare, right?? It doesn’t happen to me most months, but May was kind to me – or I’ve finally mastered the art of picking my ideal books to read!
