WWW Wednesday – What I’m Reading: 18th March 2020

So, this is a strange week. With everything going on in the world right now, it feels like reading for escapism has never been so pertinent. I’m definitely using my reading time to take my mind off the pandemic and sometimes that’s very much needed; the influx of news and updates can become overwhelming. Hope everyone is staying safe.

/ WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?

I’m listening to Grown Ups by Marian Keyes. The best bit? She narrates it herself, so all the intonations and nuances are exactly as she envisioned them as she wrote the words. She’s a cracking narrator and I’m loving the story of the extended Casey family. I’ve got a few hours left still, don’t want it to finish, it’s brilliant escapism right now.

/ WHAT HAVE YOU RECENTLY READ?

I loved The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield – a creepy, enticing story. To quote myself in the review: ‘At its heart, The Thirteenth Tale is a classic ‘character has an incurable illness so decides to spill their deepest secrets’ story and I am here for it.’ Quite.

/ WHAT WILL YOU READ NEXT?

It’s very tricky to answer this. My mind feels all over the place, so something light but engaging is what I feel like. I do have Us Three by Ruth Jones sitting on my Netgalley shelf and as I really enjoyed her debut novel, Never Greener, I was thinking Us Three might be a good shout next:

      1. The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter and His Dark Materials are lovely, light magical adventures. If you struggle with full on magic, maybe try magical realism, like The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton or right now, I am reading The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale.

  8. That’s so neat that Marian Keyes narrator her own book! I love it when authors do that. It somehow just adds to the experience to me. I loved The Thirteenth Tale, too, when I read it! Have you read her latest book, Once Upon A River? I highly recommend it!
