When you’re living through a pandemic, the last thing you want to do is start reading a dystopian nightmare of a book. Nope, this is a time for good vibes and books that bring a smile to your face. In my opinion, anyway. If you’re looking for a feel-good read, here are 5 that never fail to make me feel happy after reading. Just the hit of bibliotherapy we all need right now.
5 Feel-Good Books to Escape Into:
(Just click the book title for my full review. )
/ The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary
If you spend a few hours in the company of Tiffy and Leon, you’re guaranteed to have more of a spring in your step. Yes, this is a rom-com, but please don’t dismiss it if you think this isn’t your genre. This book is for everyone that loves a great story.
/ The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
This tells the story of Don and Rosie. Don is autistic, so doesn’t respond to situations and social cues in ways you would expect. With very funny and very heartwarming results. Honestly, this book has the power to make anyone feel great. Read it now!
/ The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett
Imagine if the Queen became an avid reader and started to let her royal duties slip a little? That’s exactly what Alan Bennett does in this fantastic novella that is charmingly delightful. It’s a quick read too, if you need an afternoon pick-me-up.
/ Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen
Aisling is an Irish phenomenon. She’s a specific type of Irish woman (see my full review for more detail on this) who sees the positive in things and has a truly hilarious outlook on life. By reading this book you’ll meet an amazing character and get a crash course in Irish colloquialisms.
/ The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abi Waxman
The book I didn’t expect to love so much. Yes, the saccharine levels are high at points, but this fresh, funny, excellently written rom-com is everything you want from a feel-good book. Plus – as you may have gathered from the title – the lead character, Nina, adores books just as much as we do!
How are you finding reading at the moment? Are you too distracted to finish a book? Or find that you only want to read certain genres? Hope you find something here that you enjoy. I’d love to know your feel-good reads!
I’m actually resding more non-fiction than I usually do but I’m enjoying everything I’m picking up. I’m planning to start a short story collection to change things up a little bit.

I 100% agree that The Flatshare is a great feel-good book! I loved it when I read it last year, and the audiobook is also great!

Reading shorter books at the moment, still a bit too distracted for anything too complex or substantial. I’ve been reading Mitch Albom’s non-fiction books, they don’t shy away from life’s challenges but they’re very life affirming. X

Thank you for the tip, I’ll take a look. I’ve read The Five People You Meet in Heaven but not his non-fiction. Life affirming sounds like a good call right now!

Lovely post and blog! I’ve been drawn to a lot of non-fiction, and also rereading. I find children’s books are helpful at the moment too. I’m reading The Chronicles of Narnia series for the first time, and so far it’s been just what I needed! I have also been reaching for Enid Blyton books, as they have a comforting quality. 🙂 xx

Thank you! Yes, love the idea of escaping to children’s/YA books. Might be time for a Harry Potter re-read 😊
I find Agatha Christie has a kind of comforting quality for me when I read them – despite all the murder! 😂

What a wonderful list!! I had some trouble the first two weeks into this shelter in place. I couldn’t concentrate on books, and decided to take a break and watch Netflix instead, which really helped. The last three weeks I switched between re-reading favorite books, which are a kind of escape for me, and audiobooks. Both have worked wonders! I think I found my reading mojo again.
BTW Loved The Flatshare and The Rosie Project ❤️

Thank you! I was the same as you, I really struggled reading at the beginning but now find throwing myself into a good book is exactly what I need.
Re-reading seems to be a popular choice, comfort reading is important right now. Glad you got your mojo back! 😊
