What I Read in May 2020

The combination of lockdown and my Kindle means I am just flying through books at the moment (easier to read on with my boys here all day, every day…) May was a good reading month; I clocked in with 7 reviews! All fiction though, I need to make a note to add some non-fiction into the mix soon, if anyone has any recommendations…

My May Reviews:

/ Six Stories by Matt Wesolowski

/ The Body Lies by Jo Baker

/ The Lost Ones by Anita Frank

/ The Body in the Library by Agatha Christie

/ One Year of Ugly by Caroline Mackenzie

/ The Bees by Laline Paull

/ Scenes of a Graphic Nature by Caroline O’Donoghue

It’s really tricky for me to pick a favourite from this bunch. I can genuinely say I loved them all. My Agatha Christie pick was the best one I’ve read from her in ages and makes me want to crack on with Miss Marple’s back-catalogue immediately.

The Lost Ones was a brilliant, clever ghost story and Scenes of a Graphic Nature was a contemporary look at identity and roots – so they have nothing in common except both being reads I loved!

One Year of Ugly was my first novel narrated by a refugee, which was eye-opening and The Bees was my first novel narrated by, well… a bee. Also eye-opening. As you can see the mix is varied, which is probably why I enjoyed them all so much.

I also gave my WWW post for May a Gothic focus. Expect a few more Gothic reviews to be cropping up over the next few months! I’ve never themed one of these posts before, but I’ve never found myself pulled to a certain genre like this before. And during lockdown when the world’s gone weird. I’m sure there’s a correlation there somewhere, perhaps I should write a blog about it…

Until next month, happy reading!

  1. Great post, it’s nice to hear you had a positive reading month! It’s refreshing to see mostly new to me titles too. The Bees does sound very interesting. There’s a few bee related non-fiction on my TBR, if you are looking for a few recs you could try something connected to bees? My favourite read of the month was How I lived a year on just a pound a day by Kath Kelly as I found it wonderfully inspiring. 🙂 xx

  2. Good to know someone has found their reading mojo! I’ve slowed right down – not through lack of interest but wierdly, I can’t find the time! One non fiction recommendation for you – In Order To Live, which is a memoir of a young girl who defected from North Korea. I’m reading it right now and find it rivetting
