What I’m Reading – WWW Wednesday: 23rd October 2019

So, this week…

/ WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Adults by Emma Jane Unsworth, so I was very pleased when it recently popped onto my NetGalley shelf. Recently, I’ve found myself reading a lot of contemporary books that are written from the POV of a woman facing a dilemma or trying to work through life / relationship issues (such as: What Happens Now? / In at the Deep End / My Year of Rest and Relaxation) and I’m really enjoying them. Adults so far is very funny and – in places – Jenny’s (the narrator) over analytical thought process is scarily accurate.

/ WHAT HAVE YOU RECENTLY READ?

So Lucky is my second read by Dawn O’Porter and I really like her knowing tone and contemporary subject matter. To quote from my own review: ‘In a nutshell, So Lucky is about that familiar phrase: ‘Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about . . .‘ People might seem like they have it all and are ‘so lucky’ but the reality is quite different.’ We meet – and get to know – three women, all who are not as they seem on the surface for various intriguing reasons. It’s out on 31st October and well worth a read!

/ WHAT WILL YOU READ NEXT?

I’m going to be a cliche and read a Halloween themed book at the end of October. But not just ANY old Halloween book, an Agatha Christie one. Hallowe’en Party has the double bonus of not only being a Poirot novel (my favourites) but it features Ariadne Oliver, Christie’s caricature of herself who is dry, witty and fabulous.

    1. It’s not something I used to do much of really, but liked the idea of it this year; might add a Christmas read into the mix too soon!

  5. I have to confess I have still never read an Agatha Christie, I keep thinking about getting one then I see some not so great reviews and think maybe I should start on a different one. I was actually tempted to get Halloween Party but again wasn’t sure it was the best place to start.

    I’m also intrigued by your other reads this week. Adults sounds like just my kind of book and I’ve been meaning to try and Dawn O’Porter for a while.

    1. My first Agatha was The Murder of Roger Ackroyd – it’s brilliant, so a good place to start. Or start with a classic: Murder on the Orient Express, also brilliant!

      Yes, if you’re in the mood for a clever, contemporary read, Adults and So Lucky and good ones to pick up!

    1. It’s not one her more famous ones but I’m trying to work my way through all the Poirot books, so that’s why it popped onto my radar!

  8. I’d never heard of Adults, but that book sounds like a good read! I’d never heard of Hallowe’en Party (I’ve been so out of touch with Agatha Christie books for … way too long), but it sounds like the perfect Halloween read. Looking forward to hearing what you think of it!
