What I Read in May 2023

This month feels like summer has finally arrived! I’m actually writing this blog in my garden in the sunshine for the first time this year, which is pretty delightful! Goes without saying that al fresco reading season is a highlight so I will also be spending time this afternoon cracking on with my next read. It just feels 10x more relaxing reading outside, wouldn’t you agree?

My May Book Reviews:

(Click on book title for my full review.)

/ Soldier Sailor by Claire Kilroy

/ The Three of Us by Ore Agbaje-Williams

/ The Guest by Emma Cline

/ Yellowface by R.F. Kuang

May might have been short but sweet in terms of reviews but they were all excellent reads that I highly recommend adding to your TBR list this summer.

All quite distinctly different too – Soldier Sailor was a hugely visceral read about motherhood. I enjoy reading books on this theme but this is by far one of the most accurate in terms of really capturing the craziness of that time transitioning into being a mother.

The Three of Us and The Guest were taught, tense, exciting reads – not similar stories but both had very captivating tones and were quick reads if you want something to devour in an afternoon.

My last read of the month was Yellowface – one of summer’s highly marketed reads but I have to say, I very much enjoyed it. It throws up questions of ownership, cultural appropriation and versions of the truth. Written in a wry, witty style, I was fully engrossed.

I also took some time to add more to my summer reading list, picking 5 new summer 2023 books you must read (in my humble opinion) – let me know if you’ve read / are planning on reading any of them!

Until next month – happy reading!
